In 2011, my parents took me and my husband on a trip to South Africa, so that he could see where I was born and grew up. Having lived in four countries, and spent most of my undergrad and masters degrees exploring (with mixed success) the huge topics around migration, diaspora, national identity, and so on, this felt big. Like a chance to get something out of my system. I hadn’t been back in seven years. So I took a sketchbook. I drew, and I thumbnailed comics. I naively imagined myself drawing comic pages from those thumbnails at the end of each day, but there wasn’t time. This ended up a much bigger project than I imagined!
So this is a travelogue, a sketchbook, and a journal. A meander through some thoughts on how where you’re from touches who you are. I hope you’ll join me.
